Set in a luxurious gated community outside of Buenos Aires, this book is about the trappings and facade of wealth, status and happiness. The gates keep those less fortunate out, but are they also creating a prison for those inside? While its hard to feel complete sympathy for these entitled and blessed yet unhappy people -- you are reminded that money doesn't buy happiness... Entertaining read!!
Starting with three bodies at the bottom of a pool, I thought I was settling into a murder mystery. I was wrong. Thursday Night Widows is more than just a who-done-it; it is why it-was-done. The ending really surprised me, though. Four apparently affluent men get together every Thursday night to drink, smoke cigars, and drink. The wives of the men call themselves "the Thursday Night Widows" - a name that becomes true for 3 of the 4 women when El Tano's gardener makes the gruesome discovery. It a...
Altos de las Cascadas is a gated community outside Buenos Aires. The lawns are perfectly trimmed, the flowerbeds immaculate, and the servants obediant. But there are also, just like everywhere else where there are people around, alcoholism, drug abuse, sexual misconduct, and domestic abuse. And outside the gates, in the not-so-perfect world, there’s a severe economic crisis going on.One day, three prominent men in the community are found dead in at the bottom of a swimming pool. How did they die...
2.5 rounded up.This isn't what i expected but in this instance that surprise didn't work at all. I was expecting more of a mystery novel, but this isn't really a mystery at all. it's more of a contemporary drama. unfortunately, i had a really hard time keeping track of all of the characters, and there was too much happening on a surface level, and not enough time to dig deep into any of it. The ending felt rushed.

Starting slowly, rising gradually to a threatening climax, ending powerfully.See what happens to the minor gods living in a marginal realm of the global capitalism, when the greater gods of global finance flee to better markets, and leave them all on the grounds. All the wisdom and wit is in the red appointments' booklet of the main character, the clever wife of an unemployed husband who makes herself the founder, the owner and the only employee of a real estate agency that she opens inside the g...
Great book for those who can read in Spanish. Great storytelling and voice.
The setting is a gated golf community outside of Buenos Aires. The novel begins with 3 men lying on the bottom of a pool, and then quickly moves to the events in the proceeding years. There's a constellation of residents at the center of the novel. We learn who they are, how they got there, and what they do. There's an ascerbic tone to this novel. All of these people are upwardly mobile, superficial, and deeply flawed. Many of them are living a false life, hiding financial woes, substance use, a...
In a wealthy gated community somewhere outside Buenos Aires, Argentina (I no longer care enough to go back and look up exactly where), houses are large and perfect. Men are wealthy and play golf and tennis. Women are well groomed and leave the cooking, cleaning and the raising of children to maids and nannies. Four men of the community get together every Thursday night to play cards, to drink, chat, smoke cigars, whatever it is that wealthy, important men do in their down time. Their wives, aban...
