Marguerite Gerard: Drawings & Paintings (Annotated)

Marguerite Gerard: Drawings & Paintings (Annotated)

Marguerite Gérard
0/5 ( ratings)
As a genre artist, Gérard focused on portraying scenes from intimate home life. However, unlike other artists who liked to be inspired by classical antiquity, Marguerite Gérard often used costumes and sceneries from several centuries before her. Domestic cats and dogs also appear repeatedly in Gérard's work. Many of her paintings illustrate the experience of motherhood and childhood in the home, and some emphasize the importance of music and female friendship. One of her more ambitious engravings depicts the typical scene of Benjamin Franklin and America, personified as a woman. The theme of this engraving helped to present Gérard's work to a broader audience, as prints could quickly be produced. Gérard has also painted at least thirty-five portraits of artists, actors, and patrons between 1787 and 1791.Marguerite Gérard was a very famous artist during his lifetime. The report on the state of French art, published in 1808, claims that until 1789, Gérard's reputation coincided with the status of Anne Vallayer-Coster, Adélaïde Labille-Guiard, and Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun.Her works were exhibited at the Salon between 1799 and 1824.
