The aim of this book is to tell the story of the life of St. Francis on the basis of historic facts and reliable documents. To bring the reality of this great but humble man closer to the hearts of people of today, the well-known Swiss photographer, Leonard Von Matt, took pictures of the churches and shrines where Francis prayed, settlements he founded and over whose thresholds he stepped, objects he used, and the beautiful Italian countryside where he lived and which has not changed very much since his birth almost 800 years ago. In this text Walter Hauser has concentrated for the most part on events in the Saint's life which are closely connected with the scenes in the photographs.
