Escape from the Ordinary
The World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms program offers a chance to escape the stress of urban life. The concept is simple : free food and accommodation at organic farms throughout the world in exchange for help with farm work. It was therapeutic for Nikita and Olivia to spend 10 weeks on farms in Italy, Croatia and Slovenia. And, perhaps a fitting graduation gift to themselves, to mark the completion of the crucible experience of a demanding and varied curriculum of Johns Hopkins University. This is a first-hand account with suggestions on how to plan a farm-stay holiday interspersed with sight-seeing in order to imbibe local culture and enjoy local cuisine. Infused with levity, it is anything but a typical travelogue. Nikita takes the reader on a roller-coaster ride sharing their “Ryan Gosling” moment and a radical pig, their Red-Riding-Hood experience, self-discovery of the effects of an overdose of raspberries, her epiphany about food and much more….….….
