Priestley at Kissing Tree House
A Memoir

Rosalie Batten
J. B. Priestley's Personal Secretary 1968-1984
with forewords from Tom Priestley,
Nicolas Hawkes and Susan Cooper

Published by Great Northern Books Limited

In 1968 Rosalie Batten became personal secretary to J. B. Priestley and Jacquetta Hawkes at Kissing Tree House in Alveston, Warwickshire. She remained in this role until Priestley's death in 1984. In 1979, Priestley suggested that she ought to write a book about him. In 1986 she did and then surprisingly, set it aside. Covering the last 16 years of Priestley’s life, this previously unknown memoir provides a unique and intimate portrait of the private, hidden life of one of the twentieth century's great literary figures.
Batten astutely analyses Priestley’s contradictions, his eccentricities, routines, faults and also his great personal charm, warmth and generosity. Unflinching in its honesty and beautifully written, it is a book which in the end displays a deep and personal love for this complex and enigmatic man. This is a work that will appeal to anyone interested in the day-to-day life of a celebrated author as well as anyone with an interest in the life and work of J. B. Priestley.
Illustrated with over 30 photographs.

“One day I very much hope that Mrs. Batten will write a book about me because, as I have pointed out to her, she knows me better than anyone else who might want to write such a book.”
J. B. Priestley, 26th June, 1979

“I have done my best and can only add the message that I put on my funeral flowers, that it comes with admiration, hope and love.”
Rosalie Batten

“Priestley clearly encouraged Mrs. Batten to write a book about him. And now we find that she did, with great affection, after he died. He'd have been pleased.” Susan Cooper
“Candid, elegantly written, affectionate, this marvellous and readable memoir gives we Priestley acolytes a genuine flavour of real life with the man. But it’s also a revealing insight into the literary and personal life of a celebrated man of letters in the last phase of a glorious career.”
Stuart Maconie
