A fantastic little collection, obviously designed with accessibility in mind, and not intending to be a world-shattering classic, this is a perfect way to flesh out the world and various factions from tbe tremendous card game.
There are multiple stories by different authors in the book. So some stories are better than others. In general, I felt that the stories are quite naive - a little bit childish, have cliches you usually see in Hollywood films.Although, I liked how these stories handled diversity. Different races were not fighting against each other but there was a mix of races in different groups that were against each other.
For fans of the card game or universe these stories start to flush out the world of the Crucible. Some are better than others, of course, but this has me excited for the Wibble and Pplimz novel coming soon. -tpl
When you read an anthology it can quite difficult to actually enjoy or even like every story as by its nature it is multiple authors telling their tales which the reader may or may not enjoy, I found the creativity shown by the authors in this book to be outstanding and they let their imaginations run riot building a world full of very complex characters that the reader invests in, very enjoyable read indeed
Firstly, a thank you to the publishers for making this advance review copy available to me!Secondly, this is my first ever book review, so let's see how it goes... When FFG announced Keyforge in 2018, I was truly excited. Having dabbled in several other of their Living Card Games (LCGs) and tabletops games, the sheer possibilities and science fiction silliness of a totally "Unique Card Game" appealed to me greatly - not only a great new game to play, but a world of new possibilities to explore w...
Thank you to Aconyte Books for providing me with an advance review copyTales From the Crucible is an anthology based in the universe of the succesful collectible card game: Keyforge. The Crucible is an ever-growing patchwork of random planets, where uncountable cultures and species have (mostly) learned to live together without descending into anarchy. On top of that there are the Archons, powerful beings who duel each other to stake their claim over one of the many vaults scattered across the c...
Aconyte Books were kind enough to allow me to review a couple of books ahead of their general release and the first one I am doing is the first Keyforge book, Tales from the Crucible. So couple of things I should get out of the way, I do have a causal work contract for Aconytes parent company Asmodee to demonstrate games, one of which is Keyforge.I am also friends with three of the authors whose stories are featured in this book, David Guymer, CL Werner and Robbie MacNivan, but I have tried my be...
Two good short stories. Lots of praise for the reviews here so far. I was disappointed. That being said, given the Sci-Fi / Fantasy hybrid world here I can only imagine how hard it is to write material for the world.I'd give a full length novel a shot, but such a big world of promise needs to deliver more.
I was lucky enough to read an advanced copy of this book from Acontye for feedback. I have to admit I didnt really know much of KeyForge before I read this, ither than it was a card game similar to Magic the Gathering. So i did know that the lore surrounding the Crucible (a world of thousands of pockets of different worlds) would be rich. I wasnt wrong!! The stories on offer vary from action packed, frantic mayhem, to considered thoughtful tales and everything in between. Having the option to pr...
This was a fun read and captured the bonkers universe that is KeyForge. Immediately filing in my "Reread" shelf.
KeyForge - Tales from the CrucibleAconyte BooksCharlotte Llewelyn-WellsI cannot even begin to describe how happy the cover art to Tales from the Crucible actually made me when I first laid my eyes on the review copy publishers Aconyte Books kindly sent to me. Genuinely, unabashedly happy. Submerged in the grimdark universe of Warhammer 40,000, and the Horror genre in general, I actually think I had forgotten for quite some time that science-fiction doesn't always have to be nothing but different...
I'm a huge Keyforge fan, so maybe I'm biased, but I loved this science fantasy romp.
I run a campaign set in the Keyforge setting, and this book provides much needed insight into the day-to-day lives of the citizens of the Crucible. Like most short story collections, not every story is a winner, but there more then enough enjoyable stories to keep me hooked. A few grammatical errors and editor oversights kept this from being a 4 star.
An excellent and well put together anthology. Each story has it’s own voice and helps to shape the world of The Crucible. Some stories are whimsical, some take a much darker tone, but all are interesting, thoughtful, and well written.
I just started running a Secrets of the Crucible RPG campaign, and after running a successful Shadow of the Beanstalk game last year, I now try to pay attention to the prose releases from Fantasy Flight Games, which tend to offer a lot of useful gaming fodder. This is sort of unfair, I realize, to the efforts of those writers who are just trying to come up with good stories using licensed material, which is difficult enough to do without having a bunch of whiny nerds digging through their work f...
The book is (for KeyForge fans anyway), an anticipated anthology of nine stories set within the realm of the Crucible, the setting of the game KeyForge, from which these stories draw their inspiration. What is KeyForge? If you already know the answer feel free to pass the next paragraph and this. However those who do not, here’s a brief. It’s a fantasy card game where players use a unique composition of cards found only in the deck they bought. Each deck contains 36 cards with 12 cards from each
Across nine stories from eight different authors, Aconyte Books’ short story anthology Tales From the Crucible explores the vibrant KeyForge setting and the characters who populate the immense world of the Crucible. A wild melting pot of races and archetypes – from elves, goblins and giants to demons, robots, martians and more – battling it out for the valuable resource known as Aember, as a setting it’s equal parts fantasy and science fiction, where anything is possible and nothing seems out of...
This is a collection of short stories for the world of KeyForge, which is both a collectible card game and a roleplaying game. The world is one of the most gonzo fantasy settings I've seen in a while, and I should mention that I knew it before and liked it a lot. Having said that, my impression is that the stories in this book convey the spirit of the world quite well.As is always the case for collections of short stories from various authors, there is something for every taste. Some stories are...
