The old Boskelly ruin on the wild Atlantic coast of Cornwall is a stark reminder of the Bitter feud between the Boskellys and Pensfords. Sheltering there from a storm. Madelyn Pensford helps a stranger who is hurt and takes him home, discovering to her horror that he is Zach Boskelly.

Zach leaves before Madelyn’s grandfather returns, but he learns of the incident and is wild with rage. He has brought Madelyn's aunt to stay, intending to make a lady of ncr wayward niece, with an arranged marriage in view.

But Madelyn meets Zach again and they realise they are falling in love. They meet secretly, with the help of Emma, Madelyn’s companion, and Robert Croxley, whom her grand father wishes her to marry.

Misunderstandings abound, with smugglers passages, superstitions and the treacherous Hayle quicksands finally bringing matters to a climax, with happiness at last for Madelyn and Zach. and an end to the old family feud.
