This electronic Chronicon edition includes all six volumes of John Gifford’s monumental history of France. It is based on the Bioren and Madan edition published in 1797.
John Gifford, 1758 to 1818, was an English historian and political writer who published his history of France in 1791 to 1793. It begins with the Gaulic, Roman, Merovingian, and Carolingian periods, including the reigns of Clovis and Charlemagne and the era of Frankish domination, and extends to the overthrow of the Kingdom of France during the French Revolution.
Contrary to the writings of most modern historians, Gifford concentrates on the actions of the major players and says almost nothing about the lives of the ordinary people. For us, this means there is much more detailed information about the character, acts, and schemes of kings, queens, dukes, counts, bishops, and generals than we are likely to get in any modern history of the same era.
