You can really feel Scheer's humor coming through, yet, surprisingly, he makes it work. I was worried it would be the same as all the 'deadpool kills everything blah blah' nonsense, and they did lean on the humor, but it was a pretty big bummer too. Interesting.
It was better than I expected it to be. I know Deadpool did this before (and so does the comic coz it says it in there). It definitely passed the six laughs test and I didn't find the artwork bad at all. If you are looking for a memorable comic, then this ain't it. But, I thought it was funny.
While it gave me a few chuckles after the first couple of issues it felt like the joke had worn thin, being overused like an SNL joke. But towards the end, the story wraps very personally for Frank, giving it a little more depth.
Another just for fun Marvel story. This was an average read that could have been much better.
Scatter shot satire. Lands some good jokes and takes the piss out of some iconic (and ludicrous) moments in Marvel history. (Like the time a literal bird man got Angel pregnant and hid the egg sacks in a nearby cabin.) Really should be 3.5, but I’m rounding up because Scheer erases Ben Reilly and the horrendous Clone Saga from the SpiderVerse and gives us Canadian Spider-Man instead, eh?
Are Marvel about to lose the rights to Deadpool or something? I only ask because I can’t think of any other reason why they’ve introduced a new character who basically fills exactly the same role as Deadpool (outwardly comedic killer with tragic past).Anyway, this aside, this book is largely pointless. Cosmic Ghost Rider, a character who hasn’t been around long but who I already hate, farts around in the timestream taking the piss out of all your favourite classic moments in Marvel history. It i...
A long setup to a limp and, frankly (no pun intended), unfunny punchline, Cosmic Ghost Rider Destroys Marvel History is a victim of the convoluted and overwrought Marvel storytelling that (I think) it's trying to parody. Some fair jabs and funny lines here and there offer a chuckle now and again, but largely it feels flat and without much heart.
Frank Castle decides to be Deadpool for a little bit and insert himself into Marvel history for "the lulz" as he talks to his family and stuff. He slowly works through the history of the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, X-Men, Captain America, Avengers, and Brian Michael Bendis, attempting to be funny and never really being funny and then it all ends. Farts are funnier and smell better than this rotting mess of a turd.
A series of gags that just feels more like a recap sitcom show than a new episode.I did like the Ben Reilly gag.
Very fun read that starts off and continues revisiting major marvel storylines with a Cosmos Ghost Rider twist and ends on a very personal note. Also throughout the series there is an excellent backstory of Frank Castle’s family and really makes the story hit harder. Highly recommend for any marvel fan.
Dog shit.
Absolutely loved every minute of this. Cosmic Ghost Rider (Who is actually Frank Castle from the future) decides that since his attempts at rehabilitating young Thanos were a failure, that he would then move on to trying to fix the other big problem he's had with his life. The murder of his family during a day at the park that turned him into the Punisher in the first place and set him along this wild ride he's had to live with for roughly an eternity. This is also the first time, to my knowledg...
Still waiting for the final issue to come on Marvel Unlimited, but I found the previous issues fine. Just, fine. IT reminded a lot of the old What If..? title from the the 80's, in that it's just a vehicle to provide comic meta-commentary on old Marvel storylines. As such, the more familiar you are with that issue's topic (for me, the X-Men issue), the funnier you will find the digs. However, overall, it just isn't all that *funny*. Fun enough if you've got MU and want a new lark to read, but I'...
A great retelling of the history of the Marvel Universe, the story expertly brings one of Marvel’s best new characters in recent years into the grander picture of the Marvel Universe. Readers are treated to artwork and style that speaks to the eras that the Cosmic Ghost Rider becomes a part of while changing the way events occurred that defined some characters throughout their history. Ultimately, Cosmic Ghost Rider becomes far more important to the universe than anyone could have ever guessed.
I love the Cosmic Ghost Rider. He’s ridiculous but fun. This and Baby Thanos Must Die are so much absurd fun. He even makes a great appearance in Jason Aaron’s Avengers. Here the Cosmic Rider Forest Gumps his way through Marvel history and it’s pretty great.
COLLECTS COSMIC GHOST RIDER DESTROYS MARVEL HISTORY ISSUES #1-6I'm so torn on this because on one hand, I barely liked it at all, but on the other hand, Ben Reilly is featured mildly prominently. I am a huge Ben Reilly/Scarlet Spider fan, so to have a running joke be about him really made my day (see the spoiler section below for more). However, whereas past Cosmic Ghost Rider stories had an epic feel, while being injected with humor, this book leaned to hard into the comedy, to the point that i...
I love Paul Scheer as a performer and comedian, and I'm sure he's a talented writer, but his first full series solo outing didn't really click for me. The story was muddled, the character work was inconsistent and at the end of the day I didn't really find himself that interested in what he was trying to say. I like the idea of Frank Castle as the Cosmic Ghost Rider messing with history on his way to saving his family but it felt tame considering the subject. I think Scheer has a good series in
Marvel exec: "Hey, this Cosmic Ghost Rider character is a hoot! What if we have some novice writer, a comedian maybe, take the reins? Tell a story with lotsa jokes! Boy, that'll sell like hotcakes. Won't even need good art."Me: "*EXTREME PUKE SOUNDS*"I read two issues. Maybe it gets better after that. Doubt it. CGR relives his past adventures in a sideways version of Marvel history. It's text-heavy, funny-short. Boring and exhausting.
Not what I was expecting but hot damn it was so much fun. I think the people who didn’t like this were expecting something too serious.
I don't really like the whole history-destroying series of Marvel comics, but it was ok, I guess. The last issue finally does something for the story and character development; otherwise, it's just a silly reimagining of some cornerstone moments of Marvel comics history.
