This is not a short story or a novella. It is a first chapter of a book. Irritating! I feel deceived and used.
Elle’s husband Brian had a stroke at the age of thirty-seven leaving him sitting in a wheel chair unable to do anything but move from his chair to the bed and back again. Even though this says "best read AFTER The Recipient", I think I would have rather read it first. It does clarify a few things that happened in The Recipient, however. Quick, easy read.
