We begin with the theme of hopeful watchfulness in light of the coming of Christ. Next, we will spend two weeks considering the ministry of John the Baptist, the forerunner of Christ. We will hear John’s call for repentance as well as his struggle to understand Jesus in light of his own preconceived notions of what a Messiah should be. The Sunday before Christmas, we will consider Matthew’s account of the birth of Jesus and join in wonder at the miracle of “God with us.” Finally, we will remember the story of the “holy innocents” killed by Herod in his attempt to eliminate the Christ child’s threat to his power. In these sessions, we will seek to prepare the way toward and into the Christmas season. May our hearts be challenged—and changed—as we open our lives to more of God’s wisdom and grace.
NextSunday Resources provides adult Bible studies on a wide range of topics, all of which are useful for individual or group study. A printed Study Guide offers four, five or six lessons with in-depth commentary and Bible background material. A free, downloadable Teaching Guide features a wealth of options, questions and ideas for teaching each lesson.
