This book was written to show that being born in poverty and living with racial discrimination does not determine the destiny of an individual. Strong family asperations and love forced me to make the best of any situation thrust upon me. I kept so busy trying to be somebody until there was no time to hate. This book tells a very personal story of segregation and integration, and gives examples of how they were minimized. It is my desire that you will find the demonstrations and examples helpful in dealing with the problems of segregation and integration in public schools. The inspiration that I received from others inspired me to establish a social service agency which had been the site of the Shiloh Orphanage. I began serving as the volunteer Executive Administrator of the Shiloh Comprehensive Community Center in 1978, and presently I am still serving in this position. Many volunteers and I have done much for the betterment of this community. My sensitivity toward people in need and my ability to articulate the concerns of the community are valued by many. My leadership abilities are widely demonstrated and devoted to improving the delivery of human services and have been noted by numerous honors and awards.
