Paul Wagner is a philosophy instructor at a small community college in Michigan. He is intent on getting the most out of his life, which means living as large as he can. He allows the freest expression of his desires, without concern for what happens to others. The agood lifea is getting just what he wants just when he wants itaa philosophical ideal, he recognizes, impossible for the many. His seventeen years at the college offer Paul numerous opportunities for hedonistic adventure. As the years pass, his penchant for Scotch, cigarettes, and perverse pleasures like scratching, picking scabs, and pedophilic masturbatory fantasies grows. In time, Paulas indulgences lead to irremediable degradation of character. Desires become more intense; perversions, greater. Reality now conspires by placing more and greater obstacles on the path to getting what he wants. Ever frustrated by the exigencies of the external world, he eventually turns into a world of his own making.
