“What's life without whimsy?” ― Dr Sheldon Cooper - The Big Bang Theory This is the delightful and amusing story of Ellie Watson from Aurora, Nebraska, who, having suddenly lost her ‘whimsy,’ sets out on a journey across the ocean to England, and then on to Italy, in order to get her whimsy back. Charming is the best way to describe this little gem. It takes no time at all to read, and the bonus is that Amor Towles has written it - enough said!Free to read https://www.newscabal.co.uk/a-whimsy-.....
Whimsical and wonderful!Fans of A Gentleman in Moscow will adore this stylish little story. Something of a modern-day fairy tale, pixie-dusted with Towles' inimitable finesse.*Free to read here*I'm indebted to Cheri (Goodreads royalty) for nudging me in its direction.Cheri's review
Amor Towles is a contemporary American (Boston-born) fiction writer and recipient of impeccable honors from the critical establishment; his two best known novels, A Gentleman in Moscow and Rules of Civility, are very popular on Goodreads. (Whimsy might have played a role in his naming, "Amor" is an old Latin word for "love." :-) ) I've never been attracted to his long fiction (not because I necessarily think it wouldn't be worth reading, but because I already have nearly 400 titles on my to-read...
A charming short story by Amor Towles (author of A Gentleman in Moscow), free online here: https://www.newscabal.co.uk/a-whimsy-... (Note: I think this site has limited page views). Full review, first posted on Fantasy Literature:Ellie Watson is a whimsical, spirited Nebraska girl who tends to make spur-of-the-moment choices, until the fateful day when she writes a letter an English pen pal and suddenly realizes that she wants to be sensible and put the stamp in the typical place, rather than of...
Whimsy and wanderlust became friends.Ah, to be young again. Oh, and remember traveling? Lovely short story. Thanks to Cheri and Kevin for bringing it to my attention.
CapriciousWell, I want to believe I was committed to company work this afternoon, but Kevin Ansbro insisted I relax in the garden with a cold drink, soak up the sun, and give this enchanting story from Amor Towles a read. Oh the hardship, what I would do for a friend!! 😂So on a whim (sorry I couldn’t resist), I found myself smiling my way through this short story of how Ellie Watson lost her Whimsy and started a journey from Nebraska to England and then Italy, tracking it down so she could be re...
Another reason why I love Towles’ story telling! This lovely story brought a little bit of much needed whimsy to me . May we all hold on to our whimsy! Thanks so much to one of my book sisters Cheri, for bringing this to my attention. Free to read : https://www.newscabal.co.uk/a-whimsy-...
"And just like that, she was a girl without a whim." —Amor Towles, A Whimsy Of The WorldWhimsy is a quality that brings lightheartedness into an otherwise gray day, though in young Ellie's case, her contrariness was holding her back and her whimsy needed to broaden its horizons. "Simply put, Ellie Watson was her own person. And to speculate on why she did what she did when she did it, one might just as well wonder why a monarch butterfly, having flown all the way from Mexico to Nebraska in t
Now this is why I love Goodreads - finding a treasure like this short story which I may otherwise have never come across. Thanks to the reviewers who brought it to my attention and gave the link where I could find it.Amor Towles is one of my favourite authors and his book A Gentleman in Moscow one of my favourite books so I was quick to find A Whimsy of the World online and read it with great pleasure! I think the author has definitely perfected the art of the short story.Whimsy in the title and...
That was super cute. Here is a link to read it for free! Thanks Kimber! https://www.newscabal.co.uk/a-whimsy-...
I've seen quite a few enthusiastic reviews of Towles' novels from GR friends, but never read him. A short story seemed perfect in times of reduced concentration, in coronavirus lockdown.Having read it, I assume it's not typical of his novels. I quite enjoyed it.It was indeed whimsical. But I think it's a children's picture book, stretched and constrained into a short story for grown-ups. It needs fewer words, lots of pictures, and Ellie nearer 12 than 16.Something like Eloise in Paris, which I l...
Sometimes whimsy should be fancied and followed, especially as a means to an end, and as a way to explore new avenues. But other times it should be passed over as it’s nothing more than a fixation on getting to the next corner, but never actually taking the time to see what is around that corner. This amusing, lighthearted, and whimsical short story demonstrates the positive powers of whimsy, while also illustrating the tangential course and hasty hustle of wanderlust. Read the story at either o...
I no longer recall exactly what I was looking for, only that in the process of looking, I ran across this short story by Amor Towles. If the charm and whimsy of A Gentleman in Moscow was something you delighted in, be sure to check this one out. It doesn't take very long to read, and I can't imagine a better way to spend a half hour or so.https://www.newscabal.co.uk/a-whimsy-...
5★Simply put Ellie Watson was her own person. And to speculate on why she did what she did when she did it, one might just as well wonder why a monarch butterlfy, having flown all the way from Mexico to Nebraska in the month of May, happens to land on one flower instead of another."Ah, but we do find out why she is whimsical and changes her mind, seemingly at the drop of a what. On a whim. But when she suddenly becomes normal and more manageable for her teachers and parents, they're just pleased...
A little whimsy would be welcome right now, since wanderlust if one has it, can not at present be acted upon. Charming and yes, whimsical. I enjoyed it, but Ellie seemed much younger than sixteen to me. I think if it is read as a fable, and one knows that going in, their reception will be different than mine.
Oh really, It's a nice short story!
The wonders of Goodreads never cease to amaze me. Once again, I was led by a daisy chain to a short story by Amor Towles, one of my best loved authors.A Whimsy of the World follows young Ellie Watson who wants above all else to be her own special self. This story celebrates the whimsical life in all its wild, whirling unpredictability. Readers who have enjoyed A Gentleman in Moscow or Rules of Civility will be treated once more to Towles’ imagination, wit, and humor. Thank you, Cheri and Kevin,
