When Pennies Were Kisses: A Collection of Poems

When Pennies Were Kisses: A Collection of Poems

This is my first ebook collection of just under a hundred poems, selected to cover a variety of topics.
My poems are usually quite short, not wanting to exhaust the reader's attention span. My main aim is to evoke emotion, to touch the reader's heart or funny bone.
My poems are not political or too deep or 'modern', whatever meaning you place upon that phrase. They are non-controversial, funny or sad, hopeful and essentially old-fashioned. They are not raw or biting, they are mild and try to be uplifting, seeing the beauty of nature, the durability of love and the resilience of mankind.
I come from the North East of England and love it's character, vistas, people and places. I hope this also emerges in my poetry. Other inspirations include family and the great support system it can provide, music, sport, history, animals, 'insignificant' things that are really significant, television and the heroes of all these categories.
Another reason for writing poetry is that it is a great way to record events in your life, a kind of diary of things that would be forgotten forever unless written down. I also wanted future generations of my family to know what sort of person I was. It is not easy to find that out simply from birth, marriage, death and census records. Instead poetry tells you all you need to know about the author.
Above all, poetry has to be truthful or it just does not stand up to scrutiny.
I hope my poems introduce some people to poetry who would otherwise not be engaged by the subject. I want my poems to be easy to read, memorable and able to be interpreted so that they have a meaning to the reader. This interpretation could be quite different for each reader, but that does not matter, only that some individual meaning is conveyed.
I hope my poems make you laugh and cry in equal order. No, hold that...I hope you laugh more than cry, be inspired more than be fearful and take something positive from them.
