The chapter names were fun and I wanted to keep reading to find out what happened. It was full of adventure, friendship, betrayal and hot sauce! Highly recommended!! -Amelia, age 10
This was a silly, fun kids book. I never really got into it, but James LOVED it!!!
A perfect mix of silly and sweet, this book is a rollicking ride of crazy adventure, perfectly punny jokes, and lots of heart! Though not a middle grade reader, I was laughing right along with Captain Kevin, clinging to the edge of my seat at the end of every chapter, and loving all the twists and turns just like Dani. Looking forward to seeing where these Shipwreckers go next!
Peril-adverse older brother, Miles, and his adventure-seeking (and completely unaware of danger) younger sister are on a visit to the Amazon with their parents. Unfortunately the captain of their tour boat, Captain Kevin Adventureson, is a lame-brained, joke-telling charlatan who ditches his tour group at a tourist trap in order to go on a treasure-hunting expedition. Lamentably Miles and Dani are on board when the decision is made. From that point on it's like a ship going over a waterfall--non...
Mike, his sister Dani, and his parents are on vacation and are scheduled for a guided tour up the Amazon River. Mike is not sure about all of this excitement so he decides to return to the boat early from their shore excursion. His sister follows them and soon they are the only two passengers on the boat when the captain unexpectedly leaves the others in his hurry to find buried treasure. Soon Mike and Dani are experiencing more adventures than they were expecting. The preposterous Captain Kevin...
I was tickled by the title and was just as amused by the entire book. Similar in tone to The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists, or a book long version of Disneyland's Jungle Cruise ride with a fantastic Guide.
It was longer than it needed to be and the ending felt contrived, but it was a fun romp. I would recommend to kids who like goofy adventures.
Shipwreckers is a ridiculously fun adventure chock-full of monsters, deathtraps, and puns. So ... many ... puns. Capt. Kevin could be the long-lost son of Indiana Jones and Lara Croft, if that son flunked out of trade school and had zero babysitting skills. A great read for action-loving middle graders.
In the book Shipwreckers: The Curse of the Cursed Temple of Curses by Joshua Pruett there is action, adventure, laughable moments, and hundreds of deadly animals! Throughout the book there are many situations where Mike the main character is conflicted with the captain of their boat (Captain Adventurson), but by the end of the book they become friends. This leads me to believe that the theme is don’t judge a book by its cover because at first Mike is skeptical about Captain Adventureson but is p...
I was at my friend's house and looking at her bookshelves (as you do) and saw about fifteen copies of this book, and I was like...."what's goin on here?" and her dad wrote this book! So I read it while there and it was a bop. Definitely the kind of thing I would have loved when I was the age this book is targeted for lol.
The bad puns are non-stop as are the many times that Captain Kevin does dangerous things that put his two unexpected young companions in harm’s way. Finding treasure is the goal of the reckless ship owner and young Dani is happy to find herself on board with the adventuring seaman. Dani’s older brother Mike would prefer to read about adventure than experience it, but now finds himself on an unwanted quest for temple treasure hidden deep in the Amazon rainforest. Many of my 4th and 5th grade stud...
This is an incredibly fun, high powered adventure book from page one. Aimed at upper elementary / middle schoolers, this book reads like a television movie, with non-stop action, an unending supply of puns, fabulous recognizable characters and also in there - a true exploration of family bonds, friendship and how to handle anything life throws at you - even if it’s giant man-eating caimans or cursed mummies. The story itself is so easy to read and page turning that it’s going to cause many kids t...
This was SUCH A GREAT READ!Seriously, I felt like I was strapping in for a "three hour tour" only to find out that it was SO MUCH MORE. We're talking Disney's Jungle Cruise elevated exponentially to the next level of adventure! We're speaking of a captain that would even give old Sparrow a run for his money (no really, he'd probably have him running after money because he's tricky like that...whether intentional or not!). We're going on about an ADVENTURE with MR. ADVENTURE(son) himself, burstin...
I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for a review. I tried to review it as a book for middle aged children rather than as an adult reader. From the silly title to the outrageous characters this book is definitely for the 10-13 year old group. I tried to read it through their lens. I know I have had 5th and 6th graders who would love this book. It's silly, fast paced, and fun. It's a little much for younger children, with some violence and loss of body parts, and a little too silly...
I love the creativity and fun in this book! It takes a lot to motivate my 4th grade son to be captivated by a book, but this did the trick! Thanks for sending an ARC for review my way, Disney Books!
This review and many more can be found on my blog: Feed Your Fiction AddictionThis book is a hilarious and perilous adventure, filled with action, goofy puns, and a nice helping of heart. When I read the author's bios and saw that they write for kids' TV, it all made so much sense--the book reads like an animated movie. It's full of larger-than-life characters who make you laugh out loud (Captain Kevin Adventureson is incredibly clueless and yet full of himself, but he still manages to be lovabl...
Smart, Rollicking FunThis is one of those books that needs two or three chapters to warm up and take off, so don't make a snap judgment. We start with Mike, who's a 12 year old grump. It's the usual trope about a bookish, timid, whinger. Then we get his 8 year old sister, Dani, who's a hyper, undisciplined "handful", which is usually supposed to be funny/charming. Add on Captain Kevin, who's an oblivious full-of-himself showboat and bag of hot air. We're all going on an Amazon River tour boat cr...
Shipwreckers is such a wild, outrageous, funny adventure story for all ages. I was drawn to the book because of the title, which may well be the best book title I have ever seen. But I enjoyed it because of the story and characters. The puns are ridiculous. The characters are so unique and enjoyable. It felt like a trip on Disney's Jungle Cruise with a little Indiana Jones thrown into the mix. I really loved everything about it. I hope that Shipwreckers 2 and 3 are a real thing because I would lo...
I really disliked that the character I think was intended to be the comic relief was really just a dick. And the story ended with the protagonist having a broken leg and nothing being done about it.
My son gives it 5 stars and wants it made in to a movie. Me: horrible and no plot. Thankful to be done with this!
