This is my least favourite piece of writing by Madeline Miller. The narration didn’t feel like her style. The story was not that different from the myth except that Philoctetes didn’t like Odysseus. The story is sad but not that good.Total time spent: 14min.
A sad but nice companion short story for The Song of Achilles .Read it here. All thanks to jessica for her review that had me intrigued, and also for the link.
I’m not sure how I did not know Madeline Miller had published short fiction until very recently. I really love her writing style and I’m convinced I would read anything she writes. My only complaint regarding “Heracles’ Bow” is that it was way too short. I am thoroughly invested in Philoctetes and Heracles’ friendship now.
Short and sweet. It's...... sad. (But I'm not surprised at this point.) It ties in nicely with Circe. Honestly, I never really cared much about Heracles but now I'm curious how Madeline Miller would retell his story. I really enjoyed reading this.
if you are familiar with odysseus’ journey, you might remember when philoctetes is left behind just before the trojan war. this is really wonderful short story explaining why. sad, but wonderful, and really packs a punch in so few pages.i would love this to have been a full-length novel, but i swear, i love anything madeline miller writes.PS - you can read this here.↠ 4.5 stars
3.5 because it was beautiful (as miller's work always is) and philoctetes' voice -- which I appreciated on its own, he was lovely and forlorn -- made me miss a heracles I don't know
so short, but so impressive. madeline is just phenomenally talented.
Heracles' Bow And Dat’ Sneaky Snake Gawd, this was sad. Super good , short, and Ooh so sad.If you’ve read Circe then you might remember this part. This is the retelling of why Philoctetes was (view spoiler)[abandoned (hide spoiler)]. I really liked this retelling of that missing piece.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
I love to read anything by Madeline Miller and I was happy to read this short story, Heracles' Bow by her when I got the opportunity. This was a sad tale about Philoctetes, who was the companion of Heracles, and inherited his bow and poisoned arrows upon Heracles' death. Philoctetes was summoned by Agamemnon to fulfill an oath made by Heracles that he would always defend Queen Helen of Troy. The ending of this short story was sad, but well done for how she chose to end her story. Miller writes w...
3,5*So here's the thing: The character of Philoctetes is beautifully done, but after reading this I had no idea who he was or what he was supposed to have done for people to be writing legends about him (seeing as the story ends with him abandoned on an island). Only after googling him did I find out that he was Heracles' companion and inherited his famous bow and poisoned arrows, that he was summoned by Agamemnon to retrieve Helen and punish Troy, that he was bitten by a snake on Lemnos, halfwa...
A heart breaking short story about the abandonment of Philoctetes on an island before the Trojan war.
"Heracles would have chided him. Did you learn nothing from the Hydra? You must kill your enemies at the root, or they will come back."Philoctetes, Companion of Heracles, was called to defend Helen of Sparta’s marriage."Stupidest bloody thing I’ve ever heard. Swear to defend another man’s marriage? He can defend it himself, or fuck off."Philoctetes, Heracles’ archer, will honor his word. With his help, maybe the great Heracles’ arrows might find out a hole in Trojan Prince Paris.
i want to /devour/ madeline miller's prose.
10-сторінкове оповідання про Філоктета — непогане, хоча й необов'язкове доповнення до "Пісні Ахілла".
Too much hype of this Author but this work seems too bad formatting. Never expected such a writing style. Even story isn't looks as per the level of the Aura of the Hero mentioned.
