This is a beeaaauuuutifully constructed series of interlocking aspectival examinations/interrogations of Doucet’s work and its place in the canon. The text manages an ever-so-succulent balancing act of being both muscularly academic yet also totally perky. I really loved reading this. Five stars plus five bonus stars for making me need to reread My New York Diary and acquire anew 365 Days, which I didn’t know about and am reading now.Oh *also* I got to see the author interview Doucet live at CAB...
This book fucking rules. I love comics from a distance (mostly via Drawn & Quarterly), but I'm not well-versed in the genre. That didn't matter: this critical examination of Doucet's work made me laugh and sigh and forget why people on the bus were looking at me askance (the cover, perhaps). Most of all, Moore made me want to read everything I can find by Julie Doucet. I'm grateful to her for the thorough introduction!
