Maryam's father was stabbed to death. Although the perpetrator was killed, Maryam discovers that the killer acted on behalf of another person and sets out to avenge her father's death. I have tried and never completed Wuthering Heights, so am not able to give a proper analysis in terms of the story's original intention. I did appreciate the fact that it took an English classic and applied it to an African context. Beautifully written, a tale of revenge and understanding.
Wonderful. Wonderful story of revenge and anger with a couple of lessons to learn. I definitely want to read more from Leila Aboulela.
Unexpectedly engaging and, imaginary-wise, right up my alley: deserts, turbans, spiritual experiences, daggers, arranged marriage. I was dreading this rubricof the Reading Women Challenge a little as sample chapters of Aboulela's novels revealed them to be Very Literary, and I do not currently feel 100% up to more Literature. But this short story was satisfying in language and imagery, in plot and ethics.Read for the Reading Women Challenge 2021, bonus rubric: Leila Aboulela.
