The doaor, who had praﬂifed aboard a man of war in his youth, and was perfe�ily well acquainted with the Captain's diale�t, alfured him, that if his bottom was da maged, he would new pay it with an excellent falve, which he always carried about him, to guard againit fuch acci dents ou the road But Tom Clarke, who feemed to have call the eyes of aitection upon the landlady's eldeft daugh ter, Dolly, objc�led to their proceeding farther without red and refrelhment, as they had already travelled fifty miles fince morning; and he was fure his uncle mull be fatigued both in mind and body, from vexation, as well as from hard exercife, to which he had not been accuf tomed. Fillet then defifled, faying, he was forry to find the captain had any caufe of venation; but he hoped it was not an incurable evil. This expreﬂion was aecom panied with a look of curiolity, which Mr. Clarke was glad of an occafion to gratify; for, as we have hinted above, he was a very communicative gentleman, and the affair which now lay upon his fiomach interelled him nearly.
