The Carpet Merchant of Konstantiniyya (TCM, Volume 1)

The Carpet Merchant of Konstantiniyya (TCM, Volume 1)

Reimena Yee
4.5/5 ( ratings)
A two-volume Eisner-nominated graphic novel about a 17th century carpet merchant from Istanbul, and his reconcilitation with faith, love and home in the aftermath of his death by a vampire.

A magic realist, historical epic with a modern, satirical take on Gothic fiction and the literary vampire genre.

VOLUME I:
A Fragment of a Turkish Tale
In the late 17th century of the Ottoman Era, Zeynel and Ayşe are a pair of happily-married carpet merchants who run one of the most successful workshops in Istanbul. While on one of his many business trips, Zeynel encounters a lost traveller in red. He wakes up the next day discovering, with horror, that he is the victim of a blood-sucking djinni. Now a djinni himself, he returns home, seeking to reconcile his faith and former human identity with his new life. The biggest concern for Zeynel however is what this all means for Ayşe, and he fears, more than anything, to one day say goodbye to the woman who is his entire world.

Told in two books, Volume I weaves a tapestry of Zeynel and Ayse's life, from their beginnings as wide-eyed, insecure teenagers in an Anatolian village, to their struggle 30 years later in the aftermath of Zeynel's death as a vampire. With a gentle and compassionate voice, this historical epic will break and heal you, and make you a home between its arabesque pages.
