Absolutely loved “Blessings”, “At Face Value”, “The Defence of Escapism” and that piece by Greg Pak.
I've been trying a number of new-to-me spec fiction magazines this summer. Uncanny has been one of my favorites so far. The issue started off strong with a story by one of my favorite fantasy writers, Naomi Novik. The stories that followed it were also very engaging and fun.
Read only the Cook by C. L. Clark: I listened to the audiobook of that short story when the author released it, and absolutely loved it.
This rating is just for The Cook by C.L. Clark. Short but powerful.
So, I've never read a literary magazine before. The Read Harder challenge from Book Riot really is expanding my mediums. I'm usually a novel person. I rarely read anything under 100 pages. But, now I've read several short stories, listened to an audiobook, and read a few novellas too. This literary magazine was very interesting and I've definitely enjoyed reading. Here's the breakdown of the content. Short Stories:Discard the Sun, for It Has Failed Us by Marina J. Lostetter - Very interesting co...
I liked the essay ‘In Defence of Escapism’ and the short story ‘Blessings.’
A very short bittersweet story. I was pleased by how self-contained and satisfying this was. The prose alone was delightful and should entice anyone to give it a read – it can be finished within five minutes or so. Read it for free at Uncanny Magazine
BlessingsBY NAOMI NOVIK
Included in my weekly zine review for May 10: https://1000yearplan.com/2018/05/11/t...Naomi Novik’s “Blessings” is the big draw in this mid-spring issue of Uncanny, and it doesn’t disappoint. Noble-born baby Magda’s parents invite six fairies to a dinner party hoping to secure at least one blessing for their child. The guests have a little too much to drink and the blessings get hilariously out of hand. The story skips forward to Magda as an adult, to show us the result of their shenanigans. Nov...
Pretty enjoyable read. I think my favorite story from this issue was "What Gentle Women Dare," but there were a lot of great stories and articles.
this review is for Blessings by Naomi NovikA half dozen fairies overindulge in the feast and the wine prepared by a new mother. She’s hoping for an auspicious and useful blessing for her newborn daughter.Even the guests smiled sincerely, rather than with envy; the parents, not being very important, had invited their friends and not their enemies to the christening of their child.Instead, she gets six blessings and one, strength, is doubled when the drunk fairies get into an argument. What happens...
This one is VERY short, but still excellent. The only reason I am rating it a 4 rather than a 5 is that it was too short for me to get fully absorbed into it. I certainly savored the prose in this one, which is appropriate considering the story contents… read it online here
Ok finally, an Uncanny Issue that was above average this year. 22, the May and June issue have some good stories in it."Sucks(To Be You)" by Katharine Duckett is a great take on succubi in the social media age."If We Die Unjustified" by A. Merc Rustad is a frighteningly atmospheric story from one of my favorite short fiction writers with a unique perspective. But my favorite story comes from another favorite writer of mine, Kelly Robson’s "What Gentle Women Dare" is one of my favorites so far thi...
Oh this was a wonderful issue! The story by A. Merc Rustead alone is worth reading and Aliette de Bodard's piece is absolutely heartbreakingly amazing
This was fantastic! I bought a years subscription yesterday on a whim - I Regret Nothing!Blessings by Naomi Novik ★★★★★"...neither of them saw anything to like when they looked at her, because the only strength they wanted in their house was their own." Old school fairy tale style! A baby is overly blessed at her christening by five fairies and must decide how to live her life with and according to her gifts. Now I’m glad I ordered nice copies of Uprooted and Spinning Silver. Blessings is likel...
