At the head of the list is a venerable old gentle man from Scotland. He has published more books than any other writer in New York. His History of Man and of All Nations are curious, and are pronounced by goodjudges to contain more solid information than the History of New York by Knickerbocker. His Mental Flower Garden is a very agreeable present to young persons and his Magazine of Wonders has a more extensive circula tion than any other periodical performance. This worthy old gentleman sometimes sacrifices to the muses, and indeed it is believed that the Lay of the Scottish Fiddle owes some of its best lines to his munificenee.
