This installment finds both Thomas and Nora on more solid footing as they adjust to the changes in their lives. Thomas has a new daughter, and Nora is dating someone and trying to figure out how to do the whole blended family thing. And of course, there is a murder. A teen has been found day, and Thomas must help solve the case. Nora is only involved in the case in a slight way. Don't worry - she is still in the book.Sten seems to capture the confusion and pressure on the teens quite well. The co...
4 starsMidsummer’s Eve is a wild night on Sandhamn. Visitors come from all the other islands to party and gave a good time. Mostly it’s young people, kids really, that arrive on boats and act outrageously – and get very drunk. Wilma, Jonas Skold’s fourteen-year old daughter is determined to take part in the celebrations. She wants to meet up with some friends and stealing two bottles of wine from the refrigerator, she begs her rather lenient father to stay out until 2 a.m. She has a major crush
Another good Nordic police procedural in the Sandhamn Murder series. This is number 5, and revolves around the trouble well-to-do teenagers with too little attention from the adults in their lives get up to one Midsummer Holiday on Sweden's resort archipelago. I listened to the Audible version, narrated by Angela Case, and could not keep from wondering, throughout my listening about the lives of these characters, and how the tragedies of that one night changed them forever.
When several teenagers go missing in a vacation town, with one eventually turning up dead, it’s up to Detective Thomas and his fellow police officers to piece together what happened. Viveca Sten crafts an interesting crime drama where the pieces don’t fall into place until the very end. It took me about ten chapters until I felt truly pulled in (they’re short chapters) but once I was, I couldn’t put it down. The pacing was quick, switching from character to character and scene to scene, and I en...
Midsummer weekend on Sandhamn includes a lot of teenage partying. Jonas' daughter stays out past her curfew, and he spends the entire night searching for her. One girl loses the rest of her party and is finally joined by one in the shelter to wait until parents can come. But worst of all, one boy is found dead with a head wound caused by the repeated bashing of a stone against his head. The deceased's father vows revenge on the person who killed his son. Thomas and Margit investigate along with
Another gripping story!
4 starsThis is book 5 in the Sandhamn Murders series, but it worked ok for me as a stand alone.. The murder takes place on Sandhamn island, located in the archipelago outside Stockholm, Sweden. I thought that it was a very good police procedural, with the police interviewing witnesses, gathering evidence and following clues. The police initially focus on one suspect, but there is more to the story and several twists and turns in the plot, before a satisfying ending, resolving all plot elements.T...
In the Heat of the Moment, the fifth book in Viveca Sten’s Sandhamn Murders series, takes place at the Midsummer holiday. While Nora Linde and her new lover, Jonas Sköld, are quietly enjoying the holiday, Sandhamn’s nearby harbor area is overflowing with young revelers. The police have extra patrols in place, but it’s hard to keep up with the crowds.“For some reason, it had become a tradition for young people from Stockholm to come over for Midsummer. They had just one goal: get as drunk as poss...
Jonas, a divorced father, has custody of his 14 year old daughter for the Midsummer holiday. Apparently, all of the teens are partying, Daddy, she begs, and she gets him to agree to let her go out with a 1 AM curfew. But 1 AM passes, and Wilma does not return. Her phone is off, and her father is frantic. There are quite a few wealthy and seemingly very spoiled teens out, drinking, and partying, but everything changes when one is found dead the next day. Is it murder? Are drugs involved? Another
I read the english translated version not realizing it was part of series. It was a pretty good stand alone book.
Absolutely captivating! I haven’t read such an engaging thriller in a long time! The novel starts just before the Midsummer weekend celebrations on the tiny Swedish island of Sandhamn. The main characters are: the Detective Inspector Thomas Andreasson and Nora Linde. Nora Linde wants to enjoy some quiet, happy time with her boyfriend and two sons. She is still reeling from the recent divorce and is afraid to believe in a happy ending with another man. Unfortunately, her new love interest has a t...
I started reading this whilst on a lovely long weekend away in Gothenburg, wanting something Swedish to match my surroundings. I’ve read one of the author’s previous books in this series and really enjoyed it, but this one did not live up to my expectations. I found it quite slow in pace, the mystery element was not that interesting, and there were too many dull characters. A shame. I read a third of it before giving up.
This was the best of the five I’ve read so far.Believable for one thing. Interesting twists. Would definitely recommend. I guess Noras situation will be cleared up in the next book.
Another really enjoyable story by Viveca Sten.Based around a murder committed at midsummer in the Stockholm archipelago, and told in both flashbacks and an ongoing narrative this is am intriguing police procedural. The characters and their backstories are interesting and believable, which leads to a very enjoyable read. This was my second book in the series, and I am looking forward to reading more.
I love it when I discover a series I like after quite a few of them are already out. It's the reader's version of Netflix binge watching. This is 5th in a series set on an island off of Sweden all involving to greater or lesser degrees a couple of old childhood friends, Thomas who is a police officer in the violent crimes unit, and Nora who is an attorney working for a bank in the contracts area. In addition to the murder cases, each book moves forward the personal lives of our two main characte...
Oh how I wish all of the books in this solid Scandinavian murder mystery series were already available in English.....I could and would happily do nothing but binge my way through them, craving pastries and strong coffee all the while! I also wish I could give this installment 3.5 stars, because Ms Sten kept me guessing in one way or the other until the end. And then, of course, left me hanging regarding Our Nora's future. Surely she would not be so dumb as to....um, no, wait, that'd be a spoile...
It’s the Midsommer Festival on Sandhamn Island. Tourists have flocked to the island. For the teens and college agers, it’s the biggest party of the year. The well-to-do have borrowed their parents’ million dollar yachts and sailboats. Alcohol and drugs abound, not only on the high—priced sailing vessels, but also on the beaches. The local police force work double and triple time to keep it in bounds. But the next morning, the body of a rich young man is found, partially hidden, making murder a ce...
Enter the fifth book concerning crime on the isle of Sandhamn, starring Thomas the policeman and Nora. The TV show is for me and my far better half one of our favorites and they have a different vibe than the books except for the laidback character of the island life and the character of Nora. The Midsummer celebrations on Sandhamn are notorious as many youths flock to the island to go into excessive use of alcohol. Nora & her new beau Jonas are on Sandhamn and his daughter also has permission t...
Midsummer holiday on Sandhamn Island attracts young people from Stockholm and the nearby islands to drink and party. It is every parent’s nightmare when fourteen year old Wilma fails to return home after meeting up with her friends. Wilma’s father Jonas searches frantically while his girlfriend Nora contacts her friend DI Thomas Andreason for help. While walking his dog, a resident of Sandhamn discovers the body of one of the young revelers. While the crime scene is explored and the victim is e
I have to say it's so rare to happen across an author where every book I read by her is 5* but that's been the case thus far with Viveca Sten. 5/5.....a heck of a record ! I've enjoyed them all so much.Marlaine, her translator has done a sterling job as well, although, like other reviewers I don't understand why she persists in using American spelling, especially as she is based here in the UK !!The only error I spotted was Ecstasy not being capitalised and that was it. Again, without parallel t...
