Ugh another bad collection of short stories....
A good variety of stories. It's an anthology so, different story, by different author, which is great. Some are, of course, better then others, but overall it's a good anthology, that offer great variety of horror in it's style of illustrations and of storyline. Interesting and original!
This an excellent collection of short story comics. The comics all have different themes ranging from sci-fi to urban fantasy. Some of the stories have twist in them and all of the stories leave you wanting to know more. You either want to know what the history was behind the story, or what happens next, or what it is all about in the first place. All the stories pack a punch. The art is excellent and very different, and the prose and pictures blend well and convey stories that are rich in the te...
A BIG Thank You to Edelweiss+, Diamond Book Distributors and Aftershock Comics for providing me a copy of “SHOCK Anthology” in exchange for my review.I selected “SHOCK” mainly because the cover reminded me of vintage horror comics like “Journey into mystery” and “The Vault of Horror”. I am a big fan of horror anthologies, whether it is a television show or a comic series. Another fact that drew me was that Neil Gaiman (one of my favorite authors) contributed to one of the stories. There are 21 s...
I must admit, I was drawn to this anthology by its cover – seems like a scene from Tales from the Crypt, which I adored at the time. Out of the 21 stories within, some are in the same spirit, others are not, but overall, it was a pleasant surprise for someone like me, who is not a fan of graphic stories.Like in most anthologies, there are some remarkable stories, others are good and a few which I did not find to be on my taste. But the drawings are particularly well done and expressive. The real
I’ll be honest, I only decided to read this graphic novel anthology for the Neil Gaiman and Brian Azzarello stories. Funny that their stories weren’t among my favorites after I read through the rest of the stories in this anthology. I have yet to find an anthology that gets higher than 3 out of 5 stars from me. Some of these stories were just… bad. Poor, underdeveloped story lines are my primary complaint with the stories I just didn't enjoy. However, there were a handful (about half, actually)
An anthology of random stories by some of the top creators in comics. Neil Gaiman, Michael Zulli, Charles Vess, Michael Gaydos, Bill Willingham, Mike Carey, Brian Azzarello, and Jim Starlin are just some of the creators on the stories within. As with most anthologies, this was a mixed bag of crap and gold. Standouts include a Paul Jenkins story that made me tear up about a father leaving a message for his daughter on her wedding day. I wouldn't be surprised if it wins an Eisner that's how good i...
This comic style anthology really surprised me! Where most of the stories were only a handful of pages, and were easily forgettable (for me anyway), there were a couple of stories that packed such a serious punch that it super-bumped up my rating. My 2 favorites in the collection were:Dumb Bitch: A woman is married to a horrendously abusive man, who she continually tries to tell herself she still loves. When she saves and shelters an abused dog, she learns that her kindness towards the poor anim...
SHOCK Anthology is a collection of short stories told via comics. Being a lover of short stories, and taking into consideration that super cool cover, how could I resist? As with any anthology, some of the stories worked for me and some did not. One thing I learned was that I needed to go through this volume slowly, otherwise moving from comic to comic, each being totally different in writing and artwork styles, was too jarring. That said, these are the stories that stood out for me:THE LAST DAN...
I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest reviewWarning: mild spoilers and long review (I had to cover 21 comics for God's sake)It is very difficult for a short story to make an impact. That being said, it's even harder for ten pages of comics to do the same. There is very little room for character development or suspense and both tend to fall flat when not handled with care. This anthology has no theme or genre but most stories tend to fall under the holy trinity of Horror/Fa...

I was beyond thrilled to receive a copy of this on NetGalley, as I am a huge fan of Neil Gaiman and graphic novels in general. This was a fun collection of short anthologies in graphic novel form. There is a fantastic and wide variety of amazing authors, and illustrators in this collection. Personally my favorite stories in this graphic novel were Witch Work, Bloodflies, The Last Dance With You, and Little Red Hood. I can't wait until this comes out in print, as I will be heavily recommending th...
This is why we love anthologies The tales are all great, and some take risks you can only really take in short tales. But wow some of them are just incredible, and like only an anthology, you come for Bradstreet, Gaiman and Willingham, and then some of their colleagues find a way to move you in incredible ways.
This is a collection of 15 different Anthologies. Each between 4-15 pages short and they could not be more different from one another. There isn’t really one theme or mood, but a great mix of sci-fi, historical, relationship and outlandish shorts. Each with a different flavor. You’ll find anything from gore to sinister and love to hate and everything in between. I think that is what makes this novel so interesting. The collaboration of writers and artists doesn’t leave any wishes out. The graphic...
I received an ARC copy of this book from NetGalley. This is definitely more of a 2.5, but it's really not awful and there were a few stories I actually liked so I'll bump it up to 3. Honestly half of my desire to round down was because in the introduction it was like 'at Aftershock we're really breaking the box and telling stories no one else is!' and that just ...does not shine through at all in this anthology. I mean I do like some of Aftershock's titles. Alters, Insexts, and Babyteeth were gre...
Shock is a comic anthology by Aftershock comics, and I figured this would be a good way for me to become familiar with more comic writers and artists. I did read these comics a few weeks ago so this is probably a good way to review them - if they didn’t leave much of an impression on me, I won’t have much to say about it. There were a couple of REALLY good comics in here though. Overall, a definite recommendation for anyone who likes/wants to get into comics. Witch Work - 3.5 stars. Spooky writi...
This is a collection of short horror stories, accompanied by very good quality of artwork. All stories are brief and involve something provoking either fear or great sorrow, and in some of them there are also strange creatures involved. The artwork is detailed, beautiful and very interesting. As far as the stories were concerned, I found some of them very smart and interesting. However, there were many among them that stopped abruptly or lacked certain details and explanations. Overall, this is
I received this via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review3.5Rating anthologies are hard. Some stories were amazing, but some were honestly terrible. But there were definitely more good stories than bad ones
There is a wide mix of different types of dark stories in this comic book style anthology. None of the stories were exactly bad...but a few I did not exactly understand. One of them is the one called "Istanbul". I can follow along with the action easily enough but I don't get the point of that story. It doesn't make any sense to me. The main character is riding on a donkey and then he grabs on to a flying device and he ends up in an area of big skyscrapers but now he is a giant?? Also didn't see...
This is an anthology of 21 mini-comics of different genres and types. Aftershock stretched the limits here, beyond what they typically do, in order to ensure all tastes were met.I love that they continued the tradition of including blurbs of the artists and writings at the end. Witch Work: 5/5Very cool art, with some spanning panels. The black and white really works for the poetic nature of the story. It’s powerful and very sad.Blooderflies: 4/5This is a stark contrast to the first one, with vib...
