Another good issue. My favorites were Chi Hui's "The Heaven-Moving Way," for its idea to roll around in your mind, Lila Bowen's weird western "Asylum of Cuckoos," and T. Kingfisher's quiet horror "Origin Story."
I listened to Origin Story by Kingfisher on Apex podcast so the rating is only for this one (I definitely need to read more Apex stories) and the narrator, the atmosphere, the creepiness of the fairy, it was all very very good.
Strong start to 2018. I liked almost everything in this issue, particularly T. Kingfisher's "Origin Story" and both of Mary Soon Lee's poems.
The first Apex of 2018 has six original stories (reviewed here), two reprints by the talented Cassandra Khaw and the venerable T. Kingfisher (a.k.a. Ursula Vernon), three poems (I enjoyed “the saddest of angels” by Jeremy Paden), and the usual assortment of interviews, columns and editorials.
