Injured in the Vietnam War, he received a medical retirement and went to graduate school, preparing to teach high school English. Unfortunately, school started at the same time as duck season. Hewitt contended, "I am a duck hunter. Everything else I just fake." Hewitt wrote for Gray's Sporting Journal for over thirty years. He has attempted to put some of those stories into his life's story, starting with this book, which chronicles his life to the age of twenty-five, from 1945 to 1970.
