In the early 1970’s I packed my bags and moved to Alaska to help fight for the passage of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act. We drove the Alcan Highway when it was half gravel in a truck that had seen better days. We lived in a cabin ten miles north of Fairbanks with wood heat and no running water or electricity. Our truck wouldn’t start once it hit ten below, so we had to hitchhike into town for work most of the winter. I worked at the Northern Alaska Environmental Center, where I wore several hats: Editor for the monthly newsletter, Administrative Assistant to the Executive Director, and most importantly their Fundraiser.
I guess you could say I don’t often take the easy road.
Those early days in Alaska forced me to be bold in my fundraising efforts. Please understand I wasn’t bold because I was courageous! I was bold because I had no other option. Those early lessons have carried over into my work as founder and CEO of GrantStation.
This book is all about being bold in your approach to securing the support you need for your programs and projects. With 40+ years of experience in grantseeking, I have come to believe that identifying the right grantmaker is a combination of art and science, and I would like to share those hard-won insights with you.
Hopefully, this book will give you some new ideas and help you develop your own bold approach to identify grantmakers for your good work.

“Many new clients seeking grant funds tell me, ‘I don’t know where to start.’ After reading ‘Bold is Gold’ I have a new resource to help! ‘Bold is Gold’ is a comprehensive primer that not only helps nonprofit organizations learn about how to conduct funding research, but also how to strategically plan and set direction for the entire grant writing process. It is easy to read and provides a step-by-step method to conduct research that any organization can use to unlock the doors to the right funder. I will be recommending it to all my clients.”
