This book/tedtalk is really important to help our society understand why we must search for different perspectives to try to get to know an event or the reality of a country or a minority, etc. It also gives an interesting perspective of the importance of diversity in works of fiction.
Amazing speech. Bare in mind that the book is exactly the same as her 20min TEDx talk you can find on YouTube. In my case I bought the book because I loved the talk and wanted to contribute and also wanted to have it in printed material
Perfect and necessary!
Chimamanda is brilliant, pure perfection.
I read this again starting uni this year, because I remembered it discussing some very important topics about the way we tell stories influence our perspective in life and in ourselves. I liked it, like I like reading anything from Adichie Ngozi. Looking forward to reading her new essay "Notes on Grief"
groundbreaking.
So I just watched the video of this on YouTube and this is something that I already agreed with. "The single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete"This was a rather important topic. Things that are instinctual and, because of that, we don't notice until it's explained to us with very small words.I think all of us who are even only a little interested in history have heard the quote, "History is written by the victors". And it is very true. I mean it's impossible not to know this being spanish, with...
Starting the year right.
Woohoo!! My first required reading of college!! This was a very enjoyable and insightful read and I’m excited to dive into it during my English discussion:)
“So that is how to create a single story, show a people as one thing, as only one thing, over and over again, and that is what they become.”“The single story creates stereotypes. And the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story.”“The consequence of the single story is this: It robs people of dignity. It makes our recognition of our equal humanity difficult. It emphasizes how we are different rather than how we a...
Short but enlightening.
