Excerpt from Political Changes in Massachusetts, 1824-1848

The story Of Massachusetts in the days of Daniel Webster has been told so Often from the conservative point Of view in biographies, annals, and reminiscences that one could almost begin to wonder if there ever had been a party of Opposition. Was it possible that Andrew Jackson had no followers? Edward Everett Hale declared that the sup porters Of Jackson in Massachusetts were hardly more than a coterie of a few people of whom it was said truly enough that they kept the party conveniently small SO that there might be enough Federal O ces to go around. But the records in the State House Show that Jackson' S party for ten years polled more than thirty-five per cent. Of the total vote! It was therefore natural to conclude that another chapter remained to be written, an account of the liberals who rejected the leadership Of Webster.
