The History of the Devil

The History of the Devil

Eileen Salter
0/5 ( ratings)
The belief in and the prosecution of witchcraft are the necessary result of a firmly established Christian religion of magic. All the religions of magic are naturally intolerant. As soon as one of them triumphs over its rivals, as soon as it is worked out into a systematic creed and organised in an institution such as the Church, it will like all combinations or trusts, with all means at its command, insure and perpetuate its supremacy. Considering that the mediaeval Church was practically a religion of magic, witch prosecution was the inevitable result of the Pope's ascendancy, and it continued in Protestant countries as an heirloom of the Dark Ages so long as the belief in magic was retained.

In this sense, the Devil is the father of all misunderstood geniuses. It is he who induces us to try new paths; he begets originality of thought and deed. He tempts us to venture out boldly into unknown seas for the discovery of new ways to the wealth of distant horizons. He makes us dream of and hope for more prosperity and greater happiness. He is the spirit of discontent that embitters our hearts, but in the end often leads to a better arrangement of affairs. In truth, he is a very useful servant in all his heinous features of character.

Yet, Satan may promise independence by a call to arms against rules and order; but his binary opposite gives independence by self-control and discretion. Satan is sham freedom, in the new religion based on science, we find true freedom.
