In a market flooded by books chronicling the activities of detectives dealing with all sorts of supernatural/paranormal menace in different categories (YA/gothic/sci-fi etc.), this slim and very-very reasonably priced book should be read to get a good idea about the genre. Edited by Mark Valentine, it has the following contents: -(*) Introduction: an overview of the genre and its 'evolution' over past couple of centuries.(1) THE WARDER OF THE DOOR by Robert Eustace & L.T.Meade: a very-very good
As the title implies this is a selection of stories that deal with the supernatural/occult in ways reminiscent of detective stories. While some of them clearly fit the eponymous description of "supernatural sleuth" (like Hodgson's well-known Carnacki for example) other stories are more or less traditional narratives of haunted houses with the detective aspect playing only a very minor role. Most of the stories are from the classical era of the supernatural sleuth, 1890-1840. Nice collection. Some stories are better than others.
A varied collection of stories from what you might describe as a niche sub-genre of the ghost story, the psychic detective tale. These range from classic late Victorian stories to very recent ones, and as you might expect, is something of a mixed bag in terms of quality. Stories like 'The Sheelagh-na-gig' and 'Spirit Solutions' start off well but have rather unsatisfactory endings. Personally, the best story was 'The Prince of Barlocco', written by Mark Valentine who edited the whole volume. This story is set on a tiny Scottish islan...
There are some great stories in this book. Unfortunately also some stories that should never have been written. Funnily enough it seems theat the shorter the stories in the book are the better they are. Never before have I seen such a correlation in a book.
Alright. Genre's not my bag, but some of the stories in the later half are pretty good.
