This book is dreamy and poetic with the best of lyrical language. It is informative, fun to read, and will be a treasure through the ages. I have read it to my children numerous times. We never grow tired of it. Highly recommend it.
Stunningly beautiful illustrations, with a simple story. A book that you'll want to look at over and over again for the lovely pictures.
This was a nice review of the arctic animals. My kids and I enjoyed it. I rated it lower as this just isn't a book we will likely return to again and again. It was a nice read.

What live in the Arctic Ice House?
We love Jane Yolen in our house! This is my favorite book so far. The poetry just flows off the pages and I want to read to the kids over and over just to see the beauty of it jump off the pages.
I read this book as one of my poetry picture books.This beautifully written book details life in the Arctic for a variety of animals. The book follows the animals through the tough, cold winter nights. The book shows how ice and snow may just look like ice and snow, but there are many animals moving among the cold winter nights. Jane Yolen's "Welcome to the Ice House" is a beautifully written description of life in the Arctic from winter to the dawning of spring. Yolen's narrative is poetic and the illustrations by Laura Regan are hauntingly lovely and capture the constant twilight of the Arctic winter.This book would lend itself to a study of animals of the Arctic region. I thought this was a neat little children's book. I wouldn't say it was necessarily memorable or my favorite, but the illustrations were well done and the story was informative. I enjoyed the rhythm of the words and some of the wintery creatures made me smile. I enjoy wintery things. There really isn't a plot. It's just an introduction to animals that live in the arctic.
Gorgeous illustrations highlight this poetic book about the frozen North. The narrative and illustrations complement each other nicely and make this an educational and fun book to read aloud.

The text in this book was written almost like a long poem, it did use many large words. Words that a young child wouldn't understand what they meant. However the illustrations in this book are beautiful so if you check it out do so more for the illustrations than for the actual text.
This book is a great example of effective execution of rhyming in a picture book. It is not sing-songy, but provides a varied, textured rhythm to the text.

The illustrations are absolutely incredible and beautiful. My 2 year old loves this book and its great to teach about Arctic ecosystems. The words don't flow well and seem a bit stilted, though.
