Pretty great anthology. I hope that people that going through these things are in a better place after reading this.
Where do I start?I am so glad I found this book. Super raw, it brings you to a brutal side of what real life is. This book helped me go through a dark time, I think it’s safe to say I found this book at the right time & moment in my life. It makes me feel less alone & motivates me to keep my head up.
Very slightly a mixed bag that leans toward the good side. Maybe it's just because I like booze and don't struggle with addiction or depression, but I got the impression from a handful of stories that they were less "rock bottom" and more "proud of being straight edge." I generally find these types of stories of addiction so engaging in the same way psychological horror is engaging, but when every so often I feel like it's being implied that drinking is "lesser" or like I should be straight edge...
Wow! This is a good read by most definitely not a light read! Gritty, emotional tales of hitting rock bottom that both inspires and breaks your heart at the same time. I had to read it in sections because it got too emotionally heavy to read all of the stories in one go. A fantastic anthology though I would highly recommend!
Aaahhhhhhh this was SUCH a pleasure to finally get to read!! Addictive/compulsive behavior/substance abuse is the central prism through which all the light of my belief systems and world view are refracted, and in comics form!?? Please. This book was early Christmas thank you so much to all the contributors for sharing.
I think I found my new favorite genre 😱
Really enjoyed this anthology of true tales of addiction and the dark paths to which it often leads. There are plenty of harrowing tales of nihilistic self-destruction, others laced with hope and redemption, and, for balance, several that are more light-hearted and even downright funny. Some of my favorites include the robustly drawn "Shot Thru the Heart" and "Down the Hatch" by Editor J.T. Yost; John Porcellino's stark, single-page "Invisible Cat"; the always-charming Liz Lunney with "Bottoms U...
This anthology was very powerful. I am a sober man who has struggled with alcohol over the years and these stories of addiction were devastatingly emotional. Another word that comes to mind is "raw". There is no denying the brutal honesty of each of the writers. They have poured their heart and soul into each story. My experience with the book was stretched out over 3 days. It's not so much that it was 249 pages but it required multiple breaks. If I'm reading Tom Gauld or Kevin Czap I can read t...
BOTTOMS UP! True Tales of Hitting Rock Bottom! https://buff.ly/2vbX9Zk is a 256-page, perfect-bound, B&W with full-color covers, anthology written and illustrated by various artists. Edited by J.T. Yost and published by Birdcage Bottom Books. This massive comic is filled with personal stories of people at their lowest points in life, all thanks to various forms of addiction. Alcohol and drugs seem to weave a common thread through most of the stories, however pornography and sex, among a few other...
It was a sometimes harrowing, but always rewarding, experience to compile this anthology. I was very impressed with all of the contributors, the writers for being so forthcoming with sometimes difficult stories, and the cartoonists for adapting the stories in such a varied and faithful manner. I hope that readers are both entertained and affected.
