Poll tax riot : 10 hours that shook Trafalgar Square

Sally Stein
2/5 ( ratings)
"600 years ago the people rose up against an iniquitous tax, the lord chancellor's head was subject to their anger, cut off and placed upon a pole at Tower hill, 'No Poll Tax' the refrain of the mob echoes through the years to the present day. The 31st of march, London is again the scene of discontent as 200,000 people turn out to oppose the poll tax. The march arrives at Trafalgar Square, we see the outbreak of the most serious civil disturbance in central London this century, as thousands of people fight pitched battles with the police, lasting several hours, giving them and their bosses the fright of their lives. Next day, in an attempt to reimpose their reality, the capitalist media villifies the anti-poll tax rioters. This pamphlet, through a series of eye witness accounts, attempts to represent another reality, one of resistance to the ruling class and its laws, an unbroken li9ne from 1381 to today."
