James T. Keane
0/5 ( ratings)
In American history, there were perhaps no more stressful time for constitutional government than the period that was known as the Watergate affair of the early 1970’s. It was a scandal that tested the traditional belief in the probity of American governance. In addition to bringing about the resignation of a president, the Watergate affair had far-reaching effects that could not have been understood at the time but would only become clearer decades later.

Along with other journalists and reporters of the time, America covered the growing scandal and its aftermath from its own unique perspective. In these selected essays and editorials, selected by James T. Keane, General Editor, we follow along as the scandal unfolded and see how 'America' covered momentous events that shook the America the nation and the effects it had on our political system. With an introduction providing an overview of the period, plus a revealing postscript by Raymond A. Schroth, S.J. that provides an informative background essay on three Jesuits who were impacted by Watergate in various ways, we come to see how a “third-rate burglary” affected not just the political and social order, but a religious one as well.
