Kay tripped lightly up the front walk of the Priestley's big, ranch-style home. She was lighthearted and light-headed. The plan she had conceived for the evening was bold and just a little crazy. But if it worked, all her problems would be over. Nevertheless, it had taken all the strength she could muster to leave a message for Jerry at the airport, telling him where she was, and telling him to call Phil and Sue Butler. Phil had sounded a little leery of being invited to his competitor's house for a night of swinging fun; but when Kay assured him just how swinging it would be, he agreed.
The door chimes rang merrily, and seconds later Harry opened the door.
"Come in, come in," he cheerfully greeted her. She paused in the hallway as Harry closed the door. "Is Monica home?"
Harry took her by the elbow. "Did you want her to be?"
"I'm not sure. Does she know about you...?"
He interrupted her with a knowing smile. "C'mon into the living room."
Monica awaited them with a tray of drinks. The older woman greeted Kay warmly. The young wife's surprise flickered only momentarily, then she turned a practiced, revealing smile on the woman as she accepted the drink.
"I'm so glad you decided to come over."
"Are you ... really glad, I mean?"
"I hope to show you how much," Monica replied, her smile showing a row of sparkling, even teeth. "Harry has told me so many intimate things about you."
