Collected Poems

Collected Poems

Jerzy Peterkiewicz
0/5 ( ratings)
All the poems of Karol Wojtyla, Pope John Paul II, have here been translated by Jerzy Peterkiewicz. The translator's illuminating introduction also explores Karol Wojtyla's place in Polish cultural and religious history. The first sequence in the collection, Song of the Hidden God, is of particular interest. It was written while Karol Wojtyla was still training to be a priest, and published anonymously. Also discussed in the introduction is Cardinal Wojtyla's preface to an anthology of poems written by priests, in which he considers how 'the two vocations, the priest's and the poet's, coexist and act on each other in the same person.' Such a question, he adds, touches on the personal secret which each poet carries in him.
