On his sixteenth birthday in 1847 Bill Smith’s father reads him the Parable of the Talents in the Bible and sends him from home with one hundred dollars and a charge to return in a year with his “talents” increased.
Bill immediately loses his money to a shyster and is shanghaied aboard the Peacock, a clipper ship bound for China.
The ensuing year is filled with many adventures on the high seas and in the Orient as Bill grows into a man. But he returns home with only one hundred dollars in his pocket, disappointed that he had failed to increase his talents.
His father is pleased, however, telling Bill that the lessons he learned were worth much more than money and gave him talents that would lead to success in life.
