There are two stories on the 32nd annual Asimov’s Readers’ Awards ballot in this issue:"Soulmates.com" by Will McIntosh. What if computer-dating programs got really, really good? Meet Daniel, a philosophy grad student with poor impulse control, who's about to discover the drawbacks of pissing off such a program. 5-star story. I liked this one a lot. Look for it on the award ballots. Don't miss. Reprinted in Rich Horton's Year's Best Science Fiction & Fantasy 2018“Number Thirty-Nine Skink“, Suzan...
A worthy issue to celebrate the magazine's 40th anniversary. Invasion of the Saucer Men was another good take on a vintage sci fi film from Dale Bailey. Soulmates.com provides a disturbing look at getting catfished in the future. Number Thirty-Nine Skink is an instant classic, deftly blending old-school exploration with modern depth and darkness. Tao Zero is an engaging novella that weaves together impenetrable philosophies and physics using engaging prose.
Read so far:"Soulmates.com" by Will McIntosh was OK. "Three Can Keep a Secret ..." by Bill Johnson and Gregory Frost. I didn't like"Number Thirty-Nine Skink" by Suzanne Palmer, I don't see the point."The Ones Who Know Where They Are Going" by Sarah Pinsker, an awful riff on The ones who walk away."Invasion of the Saucer-Men" by Dale Bailey. Tiresome rehash of the american high school lore.I'm not liking this issue so far."Kitty Hawk" by Alan Smale was better, but too many world changes are deriv...
Retroactive Review (12 Sep 2021): The novella by Broderick was kind of so-so for me (it was primarily a reflection on Tao within a scifi story, but didn't really work for me since I know nothing about Tao). I enjoyed half of the novelettes, and most of the short stories. The story by Sarah Pinsker was a pseudo-sequel to Le Guin's "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" from the perspective of the child. Yeeaaah...
New reader and, alas, disappointed by this issue. Some good stories -- but a lot of stories that left me cold, or worse, frustrated and disappointed.Standout stories:"Kitty Hawk," by Alan Smale. Uses alternate history to craft a firm, understated character piece. When Wilbur Wright dies testing the famous flying apparatus, his sister Katherine finds herself stepping into his shoes -- including taking to the skies. The character dynamics are terrific. Fair warning -- this story has little that's S...
Digging into my backlot of science fiction magazines. A mixture of verse and stories. I've only reviewed and rated the stories. This particular issue is the 40th Anniversary one! 3.8 out of 5"Soulmates.com" by Will McIntoshDaniel wants someone to share his life with, to love and be loved by. When he meets Winnie through a dating app, he thinks she could be the one almost immediately. Emily, his former girlfriend and current best friend, is more suspicious, doing a deep dive on who Winnie could b...
I liked “Soulmates.com” by Will McIntosh, and “Kitty Hawk” by Alan Smale
Also posted at: https://devinhurd.herokuapp.com/singl...While I would stop short of saying I was disappointed with this issue, I did find the quality of stories in this particular collection to be uneven. The stories that did grab my imagination are not likely to let go anytime soon while the ones that didn't will roll off like water along a pane of glass. Will McIntosh's "Soulmates.com" was the surprise of this set with a story that thrived upon a premise felt thin at first glance. At the other...
My favorite from this issue was the short story "A Singular Event in the Fourth Dimension". I like a story that makes me choke up a bit, and I love stories that make me really care about a character. And I do care about Olive. Well done.
