Ennis' last Punisher book is also his best. Wraps up the ongoing story arc brilliantly and says a LOT about the character of Frank Castle as well. Highly recommended.
Garth Ennis brings his Punisher Max series to a satisfying conclusion.Frank Castle is a soldier, and always has been. Vigilante or no, he is a soldier fighting a war, and the cadre of corrupt Army and Air Force Generals (first seen in "Mother Russia" and the direct catalysts for the attacks launched on Frank in "Man of Stone" and "The Long Cold Dark") are counting on his sense of honor when they finally come up with away to get rid of him forever. Fully aware that Castle has acquired significant...
The grand finale of Ennis' fantastic Punisher run. I'm baffled. This is one of the most impressive series I've read. It's a reflection on the futility of war: the businessmen it feeds, the monsters it creates and the victims it leaves behind. Even though most of the arcs in MAX are standalone, some bits and pieces linger on. Ennis just plants seeds early on that carry (rotten) fruit later. The final pages are unforgettable and the perfect conclusion to the series.I regret not having read Punishe...
Does that look like a graphic novel to you? No? Me neither. There is an issue's worth of the above spread through this volume. It's good, and fine if you're expecting it, but all I kept thinking was that the reason you remove the graphics from a graphic novel is only if the author doesn't have the skill to convey his message in the space provided without a wall of text. That's probably not fair. But it hugely distracted me from enjoying this otherwise excellent work, so I refuse to cut Ennis any...
Powerful story, that incorporates Ennis's love of war stories in an fresh, original way. Plausible characters in a unique storyline that like his other work really manages to push one's buttons by provoking one's sense of justice. And he also (usually) makes us sympathize with such a questionable anti-hero by surrounding him with support characters and antagonists that are even more deplorable! Connects the Punisher, and us, the reader with the Vietnam War in a deep and moving way with the help
This is the culmination of writer Garth Ennis' run on The Punisher and he delivers an instant classic, a heart-wrenching, action-packed tale about the evils of the Vietnam War and the fine young men it chewed up and spit out. It ties all the loose ends together of Ennis' entire run and sums up everything he has to say with regards to the character of Frank Castle and Goran Parlov delivers his finest artwork yet. I love every volume of Garth's run, but this is without a doubt my favorite. If I co...
This is a fantastic end to Ennis' run on The Punisher. He wraps up all the arcs he's been build over the 60 issues and really defines who Frank Castle is.It's also worth mentioning that never before have Ennis' views on warfare and the state of the world been more eloquently expressed. With a book-in-a-book making an appearance through this six-issue run, he offers a damming summary on the American war in Vietnam and just how wrong and devastating it was. There have been times in this run where E...
Score: 3.08 out of 5Grade: 62% (C-) | OkayNote to self, don’t always trust the Goodreads rating! Although this book isn’t terrible, it was just okay. There are many memoir pages that just feel out of place, a story that’s average at best, and it lacks the Punisher "punch" that I was looking for. Maybe I just missed something, but here’s my review of The Punisher MAX Vol 10: Valley Forge, Valley Forge:The Good:What initially caught my attention was the premise of this story. Ennis is excellent at...
The Generals finally get what has been coming to them for a long time. A cowardly pack of career pussies in uniform, one sympathetic soldier, Frank battling impossible odds, and a whole lot of things that blow up real good -- that's a damn fine story recipe in any genre or format. Allegedly this was Ellis's swan song to the Punisher Max line, and I'm here to tell 'ya that when I heard that news I damn near cried. There is very little reason for a grown adult to go to a comic store if that info
Simple, yet enjoyable stories from the grounded in a non mutant laden more realistic modern world, with our antihero being huneed by some top brass angry about how things went is past endeavors.
This one's going to need a little explanation for the non-Marvel-comics readers who also haven't seen this character on Netflix. Bear with me. The Punisher is a Marvel Comics anti-hero / villain (depending on how he's being written). His name is Frank Castle. Castle lost his wife and two young children when they were shot by mobsters, and he became The Punisher in reaction to that. His mission is to kill criminals. Not stop them and put them in jail like Spider-Man or Captain America do. Execute...
Garth Ennis' triumphant 60 issue run on The Punisher MAX finishes with this final volume "Valley Forge, Valley Forge" in the only way it can - referencing the Vietnam war and in a hail of bullets. The storyline that began in Vol 3 - Mother Russia, and has reared it's head every now and then such as in Vol 6 - Barracuda and Vol 9 - Long Cold Dark, is concluded here and sees this elite and corrupt group of US Generals decide to play to Frank's weakness of not harming police or army by sending a De...
In the BeginningKitchen IrishMother RussiaUp is Down, Black is WhiteThe SlaversBarracudaMan of StoneWidowmakerLong Cold DarkIt all comes down to this. The cabal of generals from Operation Barbarossa want Frank's head. And they've hit on a plan. Frank never hits innocents, including the military. He won't retaliate against a team of Delta Marines. So the cabal hired Colonel Howe for the job. Except things are never so simple and the ending is something nobody expects....Valley Forge, Valley Forge...
Good conclusion of the run3.8 stars
A solid ending to the Ennis run.
No thread is left open by this writer. This time it's the generals who sanctioned the terrorrist attack in Russia to hide their intention to recover a deadly virus, then sent Barracuda after Frank. They can't afford to let Frank live because he has Rawlins' confession on tape, so they use a Delta Force led by colonel George Howe (a Morgan Freeman-type) to handle him, knowing that Frank's code wouldn't allow him to harm American troops. The story is interrupted by several excerpts from a fictional...
This was far more into Frank's mind, his back-story, his identity. A great story that takes you through the hell and darkness of war and its brutality, Frank was a background in here.
Ennis' Nam stories are the best Punisher. The way he includes the novel was my favorite part of the story. I'd rather have read the fictional novel. The present day Punisher story was okay.
A group of military soldiers are recruited by The Generals to try and take down the Punisher. Given his code to not engage children, civilians or fellow soldiers they are hoping The Punisher doesn't fire back! Intertwined with this story, is background to a bloody battle in Vietnam (Valley Forge) that saw Frank Castle emerge as the lone survivor. Another Garth Ennis winner with a tight storyline, believable characters and action packed set pieces. Drawings are cinematic and atmospheric - the con...
