White Valley, New Hampshire, quiet, quaint, provincial, is like any other small town. Its environment is traditional, its atmosphere colloquial, its residents ordinary, humdrum, New England stock - most of them. But in White Valley, as in every other town, city or inhabited area, there is a certain group of individuals whose lives mingle with the ordinary folk, yet, whose emotional and romantic persuasions are quite different from those others. This group of individuals, these habitues of what is curiously called gay life, dwell in their own peculiar world, their lives locked in a chain of events that link them into a kind of unity, a oneness of drive, detected by a flash of recognition, a casual, meaningful smile, a flip of the wrist. Each individual is like a daisy, part of a garland that winds about the community in the shadows, truly unknown by those not within their circle.
