A 3:00 AM horrific fire in the small university town of Berganton, Virginia somehow triggers bizarre changes in local animal behavior. Police Chief Brodie Matney is forced to respond to one crisis after another as he attempts to understand what is happening.
Dr. Amelia Jo Dinwiddie, newly appointed Professor of Entomology at the State University of Virginia at Berganton, believes that the swarming intelligence exhibited by the animals and insects is no accident. Together, she and Chief Brodie combine their efforts in seeking the cause of the carnage and an end to the killing.
