An excerpt from the book.
The quest of understanding dreams and finding out what they truly mean is not new. The ancient Greeks, Romans, Christians and Egyptians along with several other cultures have been yearning to decipher the messages hidden in our dreams to this day.
The early Christians viewed dreams as a guide to a person’s moral conscience, while during the Middle Ages, where Christians dominated the culture, dreams were considered evil and were associated with the Devil.
The psychologist Carl Jung was one of the pioneers of dream interpretations. He believed that dreams provided a preview into the unconscious mind. He proposed that the dreamer’s unconscious mind struggles to discover solutions to the problems that swim across his conscious mind.
While Jung’s mentor Sigmund Freud held that all dreams are sexual, his theory was rejected by Jung. Jung stated that the type of dream depends on the dreamer, who will identify the meaning of his/her dreams with whatever goes on in his/her mind.
While different people coming from diverse cultural and historical backgrounds may have their personal views on dreams, a large number of theories pertaining to dreams and their interpretations converge on one point. Dreams open doorways to the mind that reveal some of our deepest fears, desires, needs and emotions.
