I participated in the Kickstarter campaign to publish this book and was very happy with the result. I knew one of the authors from being in workshop with her. I loved her work and wanted to support it, but there are many well-known sf writers included here, as well. There are a range of styles - from horror to lyrical fairy tale to noirish realism with an unexpected twist. I enjoyed it very much.
As the introductory essay makes clear, California is a state at home with the uncanny. There's an amazing variety in this big book of short stories set in a spectrum of Californias that are not quite the world we know. The book opens with Seanan McGuire's "Great Tarantula Migration of 1972." The horror story moves like a spider, creeping forward slowly before it pounces. Marion Deeds' "Magpie's Curse" is a lovely Russian fairy tale. Tim Pratt's "Seamonster in the Bathtub" is a timely and satisfying urban fantasy. In S. Qiouyi Lu's "From Something Emerging," two predators face off
