It is not the grandeur of its conception, nor its mechanical per fection, nor yet the sublimity of its diction, in short, it is not its literary merits that have driven me - for driven I was - to under take the translation of Lassalle's Franz von Sickingen. In all these features English literature is abundantly wealthy. Happy he who has the taste and time to drink at that rich fount. Translations into English, even the best, would be a wasteful taking of coal to Newcastle.
