About the AuthorAlways fascinated by the world of broadcasting, Jim Duffy started in the business as a writer and announcer while still attending Beloit College in Wisconsin. He joined the American Broadcasting Company in Chicago in 1949 as a public relations writer. He worked in almost every broadcast sector in television and radio during the ensuing years, including being executive vice president of the ABC Radio network, president of ABC-TV and president of communications for Capital Cities/ABC, Inc.
Mr. Duffy s accomplishments have had a resounding impact on television today, and he was recognized with the broadcast industry s highest honor, the National Association of Broadcasters Distinguished Service Award in 1989. He has also been honored by several state groups, including the New York State Broadcasters Association and the Illinois State Broadcasters Association, and he was recognized by the National Catholic Association for Communicators with their distinguished Gabriel Award for Personal Achievement.


Mr. Duffy has received innumerable honors for his work in literacy and education including President Reagan s Volunteer Action Award, the American Legion Distinguished Service Award, The Department of Health and Human Services Private Sector Initiative Award, The President s Award of the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education, the SER Jobs for Progress Presidential Award and the Correctional Education Association s Executive Board Award, among others. Mr. Duffy was also honored with the National Literacy Coalition s highest recognition, The Lifetime Achievement Award.


Jim Duffy is a co-founder of Youth, Inc., a nonprofit group serving organizations dedicated to helping kids; an active executive committee member of MENTOR National Mentoring Partnership; and serves on the board of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College in the British Virgin Islands. He has endowed the Duffy Internship for Community Service and funds the Leadership Institute at Beloit College. In past years, Mr. Duffy served on President Reagan s Private Sector Initiative Board, President George Bush s Education Policy Advisory Commission, The National Alliance of Business Board of Directors, The executive committee of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, and numerous other literacy and education commissions and associations. Mr. Duffy was appointed by President George Bush to be the private sector representative with the United States contingent to the World Education Conference for All in Jomtien, Thailand in 1990.
