A Prophet in the Wilderness: The Story of Albert Schweitzer

A Prophet in the Wilderness: The Story of Albert Schweitzer

Hermann Hagedorn
3.7/5 ( ratings)
Albert Schweitzer is one of the truly great Xian personalities of our day. He's a doctor of medicine, a doctor of theology, a doctor of philosophy, a doctor of music. Scientists recognize his accomplishments in the field of research on tropical diseases, musicians acclaim him as one of the world's greatest organists. He's the outstanding interpreter of Bach, an authority on the structure of the organ & on organ building. As a theologian he's had great influence upon modern religious thought thru his interpretation of the life of Jesus. His philosophy of history has had great influence on modern thought. Yet, as the author of this biography points out, the greatest contribution of Albert Schweitzer has been as a prophet who, from his post of service as a medical missionary in the wilderness of Africa, summons this generation to rally to a revitalized ethical religion in which the keywords are Reverence for Life. The author has a fine subject & he makes the most of it. He's given us a splendid interpretation of the life & work of this remarkable man & it should have a wide reading, both because of the man portrayed & the significance of his message for our day.--Kirkus
