He waited too long and forgot his purpose; you waited too long and forgot what to say, what to make or what to forsake, what to do, the whole point of you. Strangers to the end, he and you, you and yourself. Who is this you? You look into the mirror and see a version of him, but not the true version. Asks the mirror: "What do you value most of all? What is the sum of you?" He does not know what to say, and so slips away. Those precious things, precious like air, and just as easy to grasp.Wilkins...
Charlie's in my writers' group, and a great writer. I'm looking forward to reading this, but at £32 I'm going to wait to read the group's copy! Lovely book, the cover and page and print quality make it a collector's item (a print run of 260), but of course the main thing is/are the wonderful stories. They transport you, gently usually, sometimes not, to another world, or remain in the liminal space between this reality and a different one. Most stories have a startling image that is left with yo...
I would not have heard of this book were it not for Mark Samuel's endorsement. These are the types of stories that make me wish I were more 'literary'. The stories have traces of Ligottian absurdity without being pastiches - I do not wish to detract from the originality of the tales. Read this book.As always, Egaeus Press makes art objects in the shape of books. This one is extraordinary.
This is a hardcover copy of a print run of 260 copies
I love the candor of Mark Samuels' introduction. He introduces his "impartial bona fides" then proceeds to heap praise on Wilkinson's work convincingly, stating that "A Twist in the Eye is the most exciting collection of weird fiction (or strange fiction, if you will) that I have read for many years."I am in whole-hearted agreement. This collection ranks up there alongside the best of short-story collections, including that of Mark Samuels himself, The White Hands and Other Weird Tales, Thomas L...
This book crackles with Wilkinson and, I have just realised, some of the mystic absurdism of one of my favourite writers: John Cowper Powys. Some true classics of weird aickmania and some engaging gewgaws. A definite characteristic pungency of literary flavour. The detailed review of this book posted elsewhere under my name is too long or impractical to post here.Above is one of its observations at the time of the review.
Hands down, this is another 5 star production from Egaeus Press. The artwork alone knocks this anthology out of the park. Even if a person never reads the stories inside, they should still be proud to own such a well-crafted piece of art.As for the content, the stories came in for me a little short of the mark, in comparison to the overall publication. For the most part, I enjoyed the author's ideas, but his writing style is very tiring to follow. I can compare reading his stories to walking ove...
A beautifully measured collection of quietly unsettling short stories. Thirty quid is a lot to pay for a book, but it's a beautiful object and if you enjoy ghost stories, those of a faintly gothic sensibility or just the plain 'weird' (this is a genre now, apparently) stick it on a birthday wishlist...
Are you a fan of tales off-the-charts strange and weird, tales providing a unique reading experience? If so, then A Twist in the Eye by British author Charles Wilkinson is made to order. As an added bonus, this high quality limited Egaeus Press edition features a book cover with Tondal's Vision by a follower of Hieronymus Bosch wrapping around from front to back. Actually, there’s a second bonus: also included is Mark Samuels' brief but insightful Introduction to the sixteen short stories collec...
This is rural British folk-horror underpinned by a powerful Ligottian phantasmagory, featuring unreliable narrators and unhinged realities, becoming increasingly weird with each passing story. The whole collection is superb, with highlights including 'In His Grandmother’s Coat', 'An Invitation to Worship' and the absolutely incredible, deeply unsettling 'Night in the Pink House'. Buy it before it goes out of print!
Charles Wilkinson is an amazing writer. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in horror or the weird. This volume is beautiful, too, from the cover to the interior illustrations. I expect it to become one of my favorite books to reread.
