In When I Carried You in My Belly, a mother celebrates the love and devotion that molded her child into the girl she is today. While mom carried the baby in her belly, she sang to her baby “in many different languages,” which is why the girl can “feel at home . . . any place in the world.” Grandma built a crib “with her old and loving hands,” giving her grandchild “the softest dreams at night.” I really like the gender switch between the grandparents. One would expect to find the woodworking gran...
Don't mind me, I'm not crying... there's just something in my eye.
A sweet book about the preparations that went into having a baby and how they show up in the little girl's personality. I like the way the gender roles are non-traditional (grandpa bakes cupcakes, grandma builds a crib, etc).
Very sweet! would be a wonderful Baby shower present and Mother's Day present.
A very sweet book about a mother's love for their child. The mother sang lots of songs from different cultures - so that's why the daughter feels at home any place in the world. Nana handbuilt the crib out of love, so that's why she has softest dreams.Beautiful illustrations, and a great book for snuggles. But let's be honest, mom will prob enjoy more than the kids.
A beautiful and sweet book about how what a mother and those around her did for her baby before she was born continue to affect her in life today. Nice structure and rhythm!
I bought two copies of this picture book as gifts for the mothers of my two young granddaughters. Thrity Umrigar is one of my favorite adult authors so I purchased the books online, sight unseen. I was not disappointed. The book is so perfect and charming, and the illustrations are absolutely gorgeous. It would be the perfect book to buy for a baby shower gift or for any mother of younger children to read to her child. I really love it, and I highly recommend it.
A gorgeously illustrated and told story of growth, life, childhood, and family.
Thrity Umrigar’s has written a beautiful love song from a mother to her child. Each refrain begins with “When I carried you in my belly… I sang…I danced… I talked…” The lyrical text is spare with each word carefully chosen. It is repetitive and uplifting. Ziyue Chen illustrations are double-page spreads. They are tender, exquisite and beautifully capture the bond between parent and child. It is also a beautiful story to share with an older child, especially if another baby is on the way! It w...
I got this book for something special to read to my granddaughter. However, she saw it and wanted me to read it during our storytime. I could barely get through it without tears in my eyes! It tells of the mother's special way of seeing all the wonderful traits in her daughter. It's a very sweet book, and the illustrations are beautiful. This would make a great gift for any mother of a girl!
I acquired a signed edition for my daughter, who is expecting her first child in July. This is a precious story and adorably illustrated. I can't wait for her to share this book with her little one. Makes a great gift for expecting/new mothers.
This is a beautiful story and it has beautiful illustration as a mother tells her daughter all the things that happened when she was carried in her mother's belly that made her what she is today.
A sweet message from mother to daughter about the time she had her baby in her belly. Genuinely cute book.
A gorgeous book with a beautiful pro-life message. Written by a dear, dear friend.
What a wonderful book! I loved the pictures and the story was beautiful. I loved that the mother talked and sang to her baby, as well as danced. And she didn't feel foolish. I highly recommend this book; especially to pregnant women who feel foolish talking to they're unborn child. I feel the child hears you and will grow up to be a beautiful, well rounded child.
I love the story and the pictures
This is a super sweet mother-child love story. A young mother explains how different activities she did while pregnant helped shaped her daughter into the sweet, kind-hearted, talented & fun-loving girl she is today. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful.Kids were smiling as I read this.
Review copy: Final copy via publisherI've read several of Thrity Umrigar's novels and was excited to see she has ventured into the world of picture books. This is a beautiful book in both illustration and text. The mother shares many wonderful experiences from her pregnancy that seem to be reflected in her child now. These are lovely connections between her parent's life before she was born and the person she is becoming. Grandparents even have an effect on the child's life with the grandpa baki...
Beautiful illustrations and a short story that is a reminder of child bearing days. My children are young adults but the story line still rings true. A mother’s love is true right from the seed. A great nursery story. Any child will enjoy the pictures.
"I did this while you were in my womb, which is why I can take credit for your wonderfulness" is basically what this book boils down to. I didn't like that or the heteronormative family dynamic. This book was not what I expected it to be.
